We’re a week into 2015 and I need to write down my goals for the year. I’m hoping this will be a tradition every year, since writing things down makes them more real. So without further ado..
10K: 55:00
I’ve never officially done a 10K. I’m planning on the first one being in late April, and my goal is 55 minutes or under. I did a few 5Ks this year and got down in the 24:xx minute range, and I think I can get my form back to that point relatively quickly. Doubling the distance will be a new variable, so double 27:30s seems like a good starting point. I’d love to do another a bit further on in the year and make that first number a 4, but a sub 50:00 10K seems like a big stretch right now.
New Bethany Beach Duathlon Goal
A big 2014 goal was doing the Bethany Beach Duathlon in September. I had tentatively set a goal of 1:50:00, which seemed hard but possible. I beat it with a 1:46:51 and it was a blast to both train for and participate, so this year demands a new goal.
1:40:00 is the new goal. This will take pushing. My bike time last year was pretty great (top 30), but I completely lost it during the run and dropped a lot of time. To make 1:40, I’ll need to have the same or better bike stage and follow it up with 9 minute miles on the run. I know I can save a minute or two in transition also.
There’s one other great thing about this goal: it’s lower than Matt’s time from this year (barely). If Matt does it again, I want to make it a real contest. Of course, his strength is running and he can improve a lot on the bike.
One other thing about this year - I want to get as many people as I can to do the race with me. This includes my wife, father-in-law, other friends, and anyone else interested.
Captains of Crush #2
About 3 years ago, I got within a hair’s width of closing this gripper (195 lbs of force required). I’d like to do it for real, and hopefully be well on the way to closing the 2.5 or 3. I’ve got grippers on my desk at work and I’m using them 3x per week.
Reading: A book a month
This was my wife’s goal last year, and she seemed to be reading constantly. On top of that, the past year or so is the first time in my living memory where I haven’t been constantly reading. I used to be reading 2-4 books at any given time and go through 2 or so a week. But life gets busy and that has slowed to a crawl. It’s time to rekindle. I’ll be tracking on Good Reads
Writing: A post a month
I’m woefully behind on my writing habit as well. At least one post per month, length irrelevant. This one doesn’t count, so 13 for 2015.
Coding Project
I haven’t done much coding away from my job since OMG Earthquake. I enjoy exploring and it’s time to get back to learning more actively.
The Year of Future Plans
Somehow 2015 also feels like a great moment to pause and reflect on the next stages in life. I feel absolutely amazing (and fortunate) about where I am in life today. It’s time to take that and apply it to the next 5 or 10 years. What’s next? Hopefully in a year.. I’ll know.
